Our Organophosphates test can help you identify whether or not you have been exposed to organophosphate pesticides over a prolonged period of time.
This test measures six dialkyl phosphates (awarded the “Allergen of the Year” in 2009) from a simple urine sample and indicates exposure levels to organophosphate pesticides and insecticides. These toxins may be an underlying cause of health issues including neurodevelopment and immune system disorders, ADD/ADHD, impaired memory, mood disorders, and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
If you do have organophosphate toxicity, this test is a useful tool in designing your treatment plan.
Organophosphate pesticides/insecticides are nerve agents that inactivate the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is essential to nerve function. Though organophosphates breakdown rapidly when they’re exposed to sunlight, air, and soil, chronic toxicity can still occur as these chemicals are used on food crops, orchards, and food storage centres.
Why test for Organophosphates?
Organophosphates can be dangerous to the neurological development of children and babies in the womb and can a cause lower IQ. Other health effects include chronic fatigue, asthma, wheeze, immune system disorders, impaired memory, disorientation, depression, irritability, flu-like symptoms, and may increase the risk of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Most exposure to organophosphates occurs from eating food contaminated with organophosphates but you can also be exposed if your skin comes into direct contact with pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilisers that contain organophosphates.
Forty organophosphate pesticides are registered for use in the United States, the most common being Malathion®. Malathion® is widely used in agriculture, landscaping, and mosquito control.
Other common organophosphates include parathion, methyl parathion, chlorphyrifos, diazinon, dichlorvos, phosmet, fenitrothion, tetrachloryinphos, and azinphos methyl. You may find some of these agents in your local hardware store under the names Malathion®, Diazinon®, Sevin® Dust, and Baygon®.
