Flaxseed oil, sometimes referred to as 'linseed oil', is pressed from the seeds of the Linum usitatissimum plant which is a member of the genus Linum. Interestingly, the word 'usitatissimum' is Latin for 'of greatest use'.
Used as a plant-sourced omega 3 supplement by vegetarians, vegans and those with fish allergies, flax seed oil provides more Omega 3 (ALA) than ground flax seeds. It is also noted as a performance enhancer by athletes and bodybuilders because of its vitamin B6 and amino acid content.
Used for both textiles and food, there is evidence of flax fibre from over 3000 years ago. Revered by the ancient Egyptians who painted images of the flowering plant on temple walls and considered flax to be a symbol of purity, priests would only wear linen and the deceased (mummies) were entombed in the material. The ancient Romans would use the fibre for their sails and as the civilization declined so did the production of flax. The plant regained popularity in the 8th century as a hygienic textile and for the health benefits of flax (linseed) oil.
Flaxseed is one of the richest sources of lignans, an anti-oxidant that is both anti-bacterial and anti-viral, it maintains hormone balance and cellular health. Flax may also be beneficial for menopausal women and assist with regulating menstruation.
With ample levels of magnesium, flaxseeds help to regulate calcium and potassium levels in the body as well as assist with heart health, increased energy, calming nerves and aiding in digestion. Magnesium can also prevent the onset of osteoporosis and heart attacks.
