Fish oils contain long-chain polyunsaturated fats called omega 3 fatty acids. The major omega 3 fatty acids are: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Omega 3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic effects which are believed to be due to competition with arachidonic acid in the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, leading to the decreased synthesis of thromboxane A2 from arachidonic acid. Thromboxane A2 causes platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction.

Fish oil can also cause increased production of prostacyclin, a prostaglandin that causes vasodilation and reduces platelet aggregation. Fish oil decreases platelet adhesion in ADP-stimulated platelets.

Omega 3 fatty acids seem to suppress COX-2 expression and the inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1 alpha and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. The mechanism of action of fish oil in reducing triglyceride levels is not completely understood.

Potential mechanisms of action include inhibition of acyl-CoA:1,2-diacylglycerol acyltransferase, increased mitochondrial and peroxisomal β-oxidation in the liver, decreased lipogenesis in the liver, and increased plasma lipoprotein lipase activity.

Fish oil may reduce the synthesis of triglycerides in the liver because EPA and DHA are poor substrates for the enzymes responsible for triglyceride synthesis, EPA and DHA inhibit esterification of other fatty acids.

  • Adults and children over 9 years: For optimal health benefits and as essential fatty acid replenishment, take 1 capsule twice daily with meals.
  • For additional cardiovascular and central nervous system, support this dose can be increased to 2 capsules twice daily. Take with or shortly after meals.
  • Children 4-9 years: Take half the adult dose.

  • Fish allergy: SOLAL Fish Oil Extract Omega 3 contains omega 3 fatty acids derived from a fish source. SOLAL Fish Oil Extract Omega 3 should be used with caution in individuals with known hypersensitivity to fish and/or shellfish.
  • LDL levels: Omega 3 fatty acids can increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. LDL levels should be periodically monitored during treatment.

Side effects 

  • Side effects may include hypotension, increased LDL, skin rash, gastrointestinal upset, nausea, diarrhoea, reflux, heartburn, indigestion, fishy aftertaste/ eructation, mild elevation of liver function tests, raised liver enzymes (ALT), haematological (bleeding), major depression, bipolar disorder, restlessness.


  • SOLAL Fish Oil Extract Omega 3 is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylactic reaction) to fish oil or any of its components.


  • Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents: In theory, omega 3 fatty acids may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with medicines and herbal supplements that increase the risk of bleeding. Some examples include aspirin, warfarin, heparin, clopidogrel, NSAIDs, alfalfa, American ginseng, angelica, anise, Arnica montana, asafetida, aspen bark, bilberry, birch, black cohosh, bladderwrack, bogbean, boldo, borage seed oil, bromelain, capsicum, cat's claw, celery, chamomile, chaparral, clove, coleus, cordyceps, danshen, devil's claw, dong quai, evening primrose oil, fenugreek, feverfew, flaxseed/flax powder (not a concern with flaxseed oil), ginger, grapefruit juice, grapeseed, green tea, guggul, gymnestra, horse chestnut, horseradish, licorice root, lovage root, male fern, meadowsweet, nordihydroguairetic acid (NDGA), onion, papain, Panax ginseng, parsley, passionflower, poplar, prickly ash, propolis, quassia, red clover, reishi, Siberian ginseng, rue, sweet birch, sweet clover, turmeric, vitamin E, white willow, wild carrot, wild lettuce, willow, wintergreen, and yucca.
  • Antihypertensive medication: Based on human studies, omega 3 fatty acids may lower blood pressure and add to the effects of blood pressure lowering medicines, herbs and dietary supplements.
  • Vitamin E: Fish oils can reduce vitamin E levels. The mechanism could be due to reduced vitamin E absorption or increased vitamin E utilisation by tissues to reduce free radicals and prevent peroxidative damage.

Pregnancy | Breast Feeding

  • Safe for use in pregnancy at doses below 3000mg of combined EPA and DHA intake per day.
