"Over the course of a lifetime, the average person uses about 75 litres of toothpaste! Our mouth is actually one of the most absorbent places in our entire body so while we are brushing and swishing our toothpaste around our mouth, the ingredients inside our toothpaste enter through our mouth, tongue and gums! Our toothpaste may contain fluoride that has been touted as the answer to preventing tooth decay. However, fluoride is a toxin and when we swallow it, it is bad for us as it interferes with endocrine disruption. Another chemical ingredient found in toothpaste is tricolson. It is an antimicrobial chemical that has been linked to endocrine disruption, especially that of thyroid and reproductive hormones. Toothpaste can contain surfactants like sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate (SLS) or sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES). Surfactants are chemicals responsible for the foaming action of the toothpaste that makes us think that we are really cleaning our teeth! Often this chemical undergoes ethoxylation during manufacturing, contaminating it with 1,4 dioxane making it carcinogenic. DEA is found in many foaming products such as toothpaste. It’s a known hormone disrupter and can react with other ingredients to form a potential carcinogen called NDEA (N-nitrosodiethanolamine). The Environmental Working Group (EWG) ranks DEA as a number 10 in its cosmetics database (the most toxic score) due to high concerns of organ system toxicity and its moderate cancer risk. Microbeads are tiny plastic balls found in some toothpaste. They are included to make us feel that we are really scrubbing off the plaque! The microbeads go down our drain and out into the environment. Plastic microbeads absorb toxins from the water, are eaten by marine life and then make their way back to us when we eat seafood! This toothpaste provides us with a much better choice!".
