Functional medicine, genes and exercise

Some of us respond well to weight loss when we exercise, while others of us respond better to diet. Testing your DNA will indicate which one of these you are! Good to know.

Having information on your unique genetic variations will also provide you with insights into your bone and muscle composition, your susceptibility to soft tissue injury, your endurance, and performance, recovery time, how much fuel you use during exercise and how much energy you need for exercise as well as your blood flow and respiration. This is truly amazing as this information will empower you to personalise how you prepare for exercise, how you cool down, what you eat and which types of exercise are best for you.

In Functional Medicine, exercise, and movement are viewed as essential to achieve and maintain optimal wellness. It's important for weight management, microcirculation, detox, hormonal balance, strength, balance and overall well being. It also helps improve your skin's firmness and your muscle tone.

Take our EXERCISE QUIZ to gauge how you doing! We'll send you some tips to get started too.

Our DNA SPORT way

Our DNA SPORT way

We wanted to share with you our top tips for exercising and staying committed to working out according to our DNA and unique genetic variations:

  1. Find an exercise that you enjoy.
  2. Mix it up - doing only one type of exercise in the same venue or running the same route, will definitely result in you becoming bored!
  3. Set goals, enter competitions and involve a friend or family member. This helps you stay accountable.
  4. Wearable devices also help to keep you motivated.
  5. When you reach your fitness and weight goals, treat yourself with a new gym outfit or sports equipment! This will keep you committed and keen to 'test' run this new addition.

What are MET hours?

What are MET hours?

MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent. MET (metabolic equivalent) is a term used to represent the intensity of exercise. The DNA DIET + SPORT tests that we sell will help you to determine what intensity of exercise you should be doing weekly in order to maintain a healthy BMI. In general: 1 MET stands for the amount of oxygen you consume and the number of calories you burn at rest.

Better support for injury prevention and recovery

Have you ever noticed that you are more ‘injury prone’ than your friends? Or perhaps you are one of the lucky ones that are never forced to skip a day of training!  Do you recover quickly from exercise and are ready to train hard again after just a day's rest or don't you seem to ‘bounce back’ from hard sessions quite so quickly? Research has revealed that certain genetic variations infer a delayed recovery from hard exercise training, while other variants put individuals at an increased risk of certain injuries.

Enhancing exercise performance

We know now that athletic ability can be explained by certain genetic factors. The genes tested in the DNA tests that we sell will help you to determine how well you will respond to certain types of exercise training. Although both aerobic training and strength and weight training are important for overall health and fitness, the ratio of these types of training should vary among individuals, even between those working towards the same goals. Having information about your unique genetic variations will help you to work smarter, not harder, for the results that you want.
