TIMP4

The proteins encoded by this gene family are inhibitors of the matrix metalloproteinases, a group of enzymes involved in the breakdown of the extracellular matrix.

TIMP4 is highly expressed in adipose tissue, its levels are further elevated following a high-fat diet, but its role in obesity is unknown. The protein encoded by this gene may play role in hormonal regulation and endometrial tissue remodeling.

TIMP4 has been shown to interact with MMP2 and is expressed mainly in heart tissue while being present in low levels in other tissues. May play role in hormonal regulation and endometrial tissue remodeling. This gene is involved in Immune response, inflammatory processes, wound healing, synaptic plasticity, neuronal cell differentiation, and neuroprotection in the CNS.

The c-allele in this gene indicates a high impact variation. Overexpression of TIMP4 has oncogenic properties in human cancers. Ensure adequate zinc intake.
