- Magnesium should generally be avoided in individuals with severe renal impairment and heart block.
- Side effects may include gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
- High doses exceeding the recommended dosage can result in low blood pressure, muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat.
- Vitamin D: Vitamin D assists in the absorption of magnesium. Low levels of vitamin D may thus lead to reduced absorption of magnesium.
- Biphosphonates: Magnesium can decrease the absorption of bisphosphonates. Doses of magnesium and biphosphonates should be separated by at least 2 hours.
- Calcium channel blockers: Magnesium could have an added blood pressure lowering effect. Use with caution especially if taking high doses of magnesium.
- Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids increase urinary magnesium excretion.
- Potassium sparing diuretics: These diuretics are also magnesium sparing potentially leading to increased levels with concomitant magnesium supplementation.
- Quinolone antibiotics: Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with quinolone antibiotics leading to reduced absorption. Individuals should take these medicines at least two hours before or four to six hours after magnesium.
- Tetracycline antibiotics: Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with tetracycline antibiotics leading to reduced absorption. Individuals should take these medicines at least two hours before or four to six hours after magnesium.
