Our 'Makeup Bag Challenge' | Detox your beauty regime

We’re all about organic when it comes to food, so why should our personal care products be any different?

It’s a terrifying thought, but there are hundreds, if not thousands of untested and potentially toxic chemicals in the commercial personal care products we use. From parabens to preservatives the harmful chemicals we are slathering on our face and body daily, is daunting.

To put it in perspective, the European Union has recently banned more than 1,300 toxic ingredients from use in personal care products – that’s 1,300 toxic ingredients that we’ve been freely using until now!

As the laws governing personal care products are still in the making, and are different from country to country, we feel it’s safer to avoid commercial products altogether and rather opt for one of the many amazing, all-natural brands that offer a safe beauty routine.

After my cancer diagnosis, Heidi tried to get me to throw away all my expensive and loved commercial beauty products. I resisted at first, but once I discovered the many incredible natural beauty products on offer, and researched the health benefits that come with the switch, I knew there was no alternative.

And so I ask – are you ready to follow the same path and take the makeup bag challenge? There are loads of great brands out there that are making personal care products that work just as well as commercial products, without any hazardous chemicals. We challenge you to look through your makeup bag, your bathroom cabinets and your shower shelves and switch out bad for good.

Dirty Dozen

Here’s our checklist of the most common warning bells to look out for on your personal care labels. This is a great starting point when deciding what to ditch:

  1. BHA and BHT
  2. Coal tar dyes: p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as "CI" followed by a five digit number
  3. DEA-related ingredients
  4. Dibutyl phthalate
  5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
  6. Parabens
  7. Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance)
  8. PEG compounds
  9. Petrolatum
  10. Siloxanes
  11. Sodium laureth sulphate
  12. Triclosan

Luckily natural beauty products are on the rise, and as we’ve already gone through this process, we’ve done the legwork for you, scouring the industry for the best possible alternatives to commercial products.

Anything you find on our site is guaranteed to be free of all the unpronounceable, toxic ingredients you need to be wary of. Think about it, you’re using these products every day – surely you should be able to rest easy that they’ll make you look as good on the inside as they do on the outside?

My DNA. My Choices.
