DNA Testing 101 | The complete guide to ordering your first DNA test
Posted on

We often get asked which DNA test to order, and what to expect once you’ve ordered a test. We have made the process as easy and unintimidating as possible, which is why we’ve answered your most pressing questions, here.

Why should I do a DNA test?

Knowing more about your DNA can help you to make more personalised nutrition, environment and lifestyle choices. It can also give you a 'heads up' about where to expect weaknesses in your biochemistry, help you prevent key lifestyle-related chronic diseases, and help you craft a path towards optimal wellness.

What are the different DNA tests?

We've chosen eight DNA tests that have been compiled by experts in their fields. These DNA tests focus on key areas of your genome related to nutrigenomics, pharmacogenomics and epigenetics. All our DNA tests have robust research backing their reports, and the best part of all is that the test results are all actionable.

DNA | Health – this is a great foundation test to do on its own or to combine with other tests relevant to your needs. DNA | Health tests for 41 gene variants involved in the following important biological processes: Cholesterol metabolism, methylation, general risk for various cancer, detoxification, inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin sensitivity, risk for diabetes, risk for osteoporosis, bone health, vitamin D receptor status, food responsiveness including lactose intolerance, caffeine processing, blood pressure risk due to salt intake, and iron overload disorders. Armed with this information you’ll be able to optimise your health and wellbeing by making personalised nutrition, environment and lifestyle choices from your DNA up.

DNA | Estrogen - DNA | Estrogen is a test we recommend for every woman over the age of 18. This is a great test for those who want to know more about how their body processes estrogen before they decide to start taking the oral contraceptive Pill, and for menopausal and postmenopausal women considering HRT. Ideal for those who suffer from symptoms of estrogen-dominance such as endometriosis and PMS. This test will determine how well your body metabolises estrogen, whether you are at risk for developing breast and other estrogen-positive cancers, and how to personalise your health choice to manage your risk.

DNA | Diet - One of the first products of its kind in the world, DNA | Diet is a test designed to help you manage your weight in a healthy and effective way. It does this by giving you and your healthcare practitioner the information you need to design a personalised weight-management plan based on your genetic makeup.

DNA | Sport - Are you an athlete wanting to take your performance to the next level? Our DNA | Sport test can help you do that by telling you how your genes affect your sporting performance, thus allowing you to personalise a training strategy and optimise your genetic potential.

DNA | mycardioRx – This comprehensive test analyses how your body will metabolise the following common cardiovascular medications: angiotensin II receptor antagonists, antianginal agents, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, beta blockers, diuretics, and statins.

DNA | mypainRx – Do you need chronic pain medication? mypainRx analyses how your body will metabolise these common pain medications: fibromyalgia agents, muscle relaxants, NSAID's, opioids.

DNA | mypsychRx – This test analyses how your body will metabolise the following common psychotropic (psychiatry) medications: anti-addictives, anti-ADHD agents, anticonvulsants, antidementia agents, antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and mood stabilisers.

DNA | GLUTEN - Do think you may have an allergy to gluten? Do you experience discomfort and pain in your intestines after eating, as well as constipation or diarrhoea?

Being allergic to gluten can not only be uncomfortable, but in severe cases, it can lead to celiac disease. This easy-to-do home gluten test, which is suitable for people of all ages, including children and babies, will give you the peace of mind you need.

What are nutrigenomic DNA tests?

Nutrigenomic testing is the practice of looking at your genetic markers to determine your unique metabolic needs. Nutrigenomics research has shown that personalised diet and lifestyle choices can have a significant effect on your genes and that the best way to kick-start these effects is early detection and appropriate intervention. Our four nutrigenomic tests are DNA | Health, DNA | Estrogen, DNA| Diet and DNA | Sport.

What are pharmacogenomic DNA tests?

Everybody responds differently to drugs, and increasingly, scientists are seeing a relationship between our genes and how we metabolise transport and bind specific drugs. The practice of pharmacogenomics allows your healthcare practitioner to provide specific medical treatments, based on your genetic profile. This personalised approach to medicine has the power to produce more targeted results, and to prevent treatment failure or adverse reactions to drugs. Our three pharmacogenomics DNA tests are DNA | mycardioRx, DNA | mypainRx and DNA | mypsychRx.

How do I order a DNA test?

  1. Visit our DNA tests store and select the test you’d like to order. If you’re not sure which test is right for you, email us at info@joincircles.com and we’ll guide you in your selection.
  2. One to two days after ordering online, you’ll receive your DNA sample kit. Follow the very clear instructions on how to take the test. We don’t need any blood or saliva – just a few cells from the inside of your cheek which you’ll get by firmly rubbing a long earbud up and down the inside of your cheek. Easy, right?
  3. Your results will be ready within two to three weeks. At that point, we’ll set up your free consultation, in which we’ll discuss your results face-to-face or on Skype.

How does bundling benefit me?

If you bundle your tests, you’ll not only save money, but you’ll also analyse more genes. This will provide you with a bigger overview of your health, so you can make more targeted and personal nutrition, environment and lifestyle choices.
